Okay, now you have a plan, but do you know how well it will work in a real disaster situation? It's better to find answers now than after a disaster has occurred!



This workshop will:

Help you assess your vulnerabilities
Test your plan using a scenario table top exercise
Explore how collaborations can help you respond to a disaster
Build a shared vision for regional disaster preparedness


Who should attend:

When possible, send 2-3 participants from your institution to work together on disaster preparedness activities:

Staff member(s) responsible for emergency preparedness
Administrator and/or manager responsible for the building/collection
Key members of the emergency/disaster team responsible for decision-making


Requirements for attendance:

A written disaster plan (draft okay) that includes collections response/recovery
A letter of institutional commitment to explore collaboration to optimize preparedness
A completed 3-page vulnerability assessment (distributed 3 weeks before workshop)


Cost: No fee; just your time, energy, and institutional commitment.

MESSAGE:  In your calls and letters please indicate why elimination of these programs would:

1.      Destroy the cooperative lending and loaning system of books and materials in California,

2.      Could lead to a system where non-residents are denied access to library materials or asked to pay for a library card costing upwards of $100,

3.      Would put in jeopardy almost $17 million in corresponding federal funds,

4.      Deny literacy services to more than 20,000 adult learners annually who potentially would have no other alternative for seeking these services locally, and

5.      Denies local assistance dollars for libraries who have already suffered mightily with the state and local funding cuts over the past few years

How to fund an eBook Library

This article by Eric Hellman has a lot of good points to consider.  Highly recommended for anyone interested in what the future could hold for eBooks.

Everyday numeracy: coming to a library near you

Several years ago, the National Science Foundation funded TERC, a non-profit organization in Cambridge MA, to develop realistic, accessible, and engaging ways for librarians build everyday numeracy into what they offer to children and families.  TERC worked closely with public children librarians in San Jose CA, Queens NY, St Louis MO, Westchester County NY, and dozens of libraries in AZ, CT, FL, and MA.

The result is over 200 English and Spanish resources that blend math and summer reading programs, story times, crafts projects, games, book displays, and library explorations.  They’re all available for free at http://mixinginmath.terc.edu.

External evaluation identified dramatic changes in attitudes about math and its role in the library, in the amount of math that librarians offer to children and families, and in librarians’ communication about math with patrons and peers.
